Fresh from our visit to the stones of Stonehenge,  a great piece on Radio 4 about Avebury. Writer and comedian Stewart Lee explores the 70s television series, mostly viewed from behind the sofa, which made Avebury the stuff of nightmares for todays 40 year olds.

It also touches on things and comments that cropped up as we went round the museum and stood amongst the stones. We say that’s what these objects were for but how do we know for sure? Who’s to say what we think they might be for mightn’t be true?

As Mike Pitts, editor of British Archaeology Magazine comments; “I come from a very academic environment – university – in London – where, as an archaeologist, we were brought up to think you could answer the question to everything. I come down here (Avebury) and realise actually we can’t – you know there’s a lot of things about the past we don’t know and so there’s part of understanding Avebury and part of our relationship with Avebury today, has to come from imagination. It’s not just science.”
