The Singer photographic archive was dramatically saved from destruction by Singer’s employee Steve Francis, when in the 1970s he saw they were being thrown in a skip. Over 3,000 plates survived, a proportion of which have been conserved as part of Casting the World by Photographic Materials Conservator Sarah Allen. Sarah will discuss her work and explain how the restoration process has stabilised the objects and allowed their rich imagery to be released. Sarah will also discuss how the negatives are to be preserved and give tips on how to care for your own family photographs.
