Report: Forth Bridge Night

Monday 13th July 2009

On Tuesday 7th July Rook Lane Chapel was filled to capacity. The 160 strong audience had come to be entertained with Benjamin Baker’s seminal lecture ‘Bridging The Firth of Forth’.

Surrounded by images of the Forth Bridge, Baker was brought back to life by actor Michael Hoskinson who captivated the audience with his interpretation of the original 1887 Royal Institution lecture along with additional contemporary material.

Michael carried out his own research into the lecture and Baker’s correspondence with antagonist William Morris & supporter Sir Alfred Waterhouse (brought to life by his Frome-based descendant Nick Waterhouse).

After a rapturous applause the audience took refreshments before settling down do enjoy a rare screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The 39 Steps’ in which the hounded hero, Richard Hannay, makes a daring escape across the Forth Bridge.
