The Celebration of the life of Benjamin Baker of Frome kicks off at Rook lane Chapel with the Opening Party of
Bridging the World

Saturday 20th June 2009

A glorious afternoon of sunshine and entertainment greeted those who came along to the launch party of ‘Benjamin Baker of Frome: Bridging the World’.

Over 250 people were treated to a wonderful exhibition of photographs celebrating the engineering achievements of this Frome born engineer and enjoyed music by Drum West, a delightful themed tea by Food Frome and a Milk Street Brewery beer made specially for the occasion and aptly named Iron Brew.

Adrian Tinniswood, Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund in the South West, who supported the project, gave an enthusiastic speech in praise of the exhibition and the six week series of events which will be held to celebrate Benjamin Baker and raise the profile of engineering and science.

Standing in front of a replica, cross section of a strut, of the Forth Bridge - Baker’s most famous structure - made by Frome College students and engineers from local firm Mann William, a group of children launched the education programme. Starting on the 22nd June over 2,200 children - at Key Stages 1 & 2 - at schools in Frome and the surrounding villages will be taking part in bridge building workshops run by Mad Science and on the 23rd June Graduate engineers, from the Institution of Civil Engineers, will work with Year 10 students at Frome College in a Bridge Building Competition.

The exhibition continues at Rook Lane until the 24th July and at Frome Museum with ‘Read All About It!’, a re-creation of a Victorian Reading Room, where a plethora of material relating to Benjamin Baker can be enjoyed - including original copies of the Illustrated London News carrying accounts of his engineering achievements and the original blueprints of the Forth Bridge on loan fron the Institution of Civil Engineers. Also until the 24th July.
